Crossing guard at-risk from cars in Santa Rosa intersections

Santa Rosa crossing guard Mario D’Olivo says he “could have retired long ago if he had a dollar for every motorist who has zipped through the crosswalk despite the red traffic signal overhead and the stop sign in his hand, or who’s breezed by in clear violation of the no-cellphone-while-driving law.”

In the Press Democrat, Chris Smith profiles a single crossing guard who works a specific intersection, but I ask that readers keep in mind that this problem happens all over town.

When the light turns red, motorists routinely keep going, right through city intersections. They pose a clear danger, not only for motorists who have the right-of-way, but for cyclists and pedestrians.

Likewise, on green, motorists turning right or left will cut off, and risk hitting, pedestrians and cyclists.

The PD headline says it all: this Korean War vet “places himself in danger again” as a crossing guard, and so do all of the rest of us who attempt to use intersection crosswalks when crossing Santa Rosa streets.
